Breeders Cup Classic
Here it is, the showdown that everyone has been waiting
for: East vs. West, Bernardini puts his 6 race win streak
on the line
and vies for Horse of the Year honors while Lava Man,
the former $50,000 claim, does likewise with his 7 race
win streak in Jeopardy. It is sure to be an Instant
Classic, however is this race as simple as a 2 horse
showdown? This writer thinks not. While Bernardini is
clearly the horse to beat based on his easy victories,
the latest a 6 3/4 length triumph in the Jockey Club Gold
Cup while 'under wraps', the shape of the race figures
to be more favorable to Lava Man and his front running
tactics. While its true that Bernardini has tactical speed
and can effectively move when he wants, Lava Man
seems to be more comfortable on the lead.
Furthermore, one can argue that Bernardini has not
been tested yet with evidently inferior competition.
Invasor would be the beneficiary if Lawyer Ron decides
to push the pace with Lava Man. Invasor is no slouch
with a record boasting 7 of 8 victories on the dirt,
Including 3 Grade I Triumphs in the U.S. Now, throw in
Euro Turf Specialist, David Junior, who is proven at the
distance at Group I competition in Great Britain, and is
reportedly working sensationally for his Dirt debut, and
we have the makings for quite a classic.
My Picks:
1) Bernardini = too much class here; the price will be
short, but the exotics could prove worthwhile
2) Lava Man= This might be the value play, with as high
as 5-1 in Racing Form Morning Line a horse with a 7
race win streak; unproven while shipping or on the track
is the downside
3) Invasor = Up and coming Argentinian bred also
provides a Value Play at about 7-1 on the Racing Form
Morning Line
Longshot David Junior = Monster on Turf at 1 1/4 miles
the distance of race; Tough spot to try dirt, but this is
one classy
